Following Michael’s death, his family created a fund to honour Michael’s memory and support the performance of classical music in the Rotorua/Taupō community. The Michael Pilaar Memorial Music Fund was established through the Geyser Community Foundation in 2017, and the first Gift of Music concert was held as a fundraiser in November, five months after Michael’s death. The $50,000 required by the Foundation to activate this fund was raised in just over a year.

The principal accrued interest for two years, which was then sufficient to fund several $500 scholarships for school-age local musicians. The first four scholarships were awarded in 2020, and the intention is to issue such grants every year in perpetuity. By the end of 2025, with ongoing donations and proceeds from subsequent concerts, the principal had exceeded $100,000.

Donations can be made to this Fund through the Geyser Community Foundation website:

https://geysercf.org.nz/ways-to-give/ and selecting Michael Pilaar Memorial Music Scolarship Fund as the

fund to donate to. All donations over $5 are tax deductible.

Alternatively, donations can be made by internet payment to the fund account, 38-9002-0159024-08 referencing owner Christian PIlaar, and if a tax receipt is required, include your name as the reference and email the family at cepilaar63@gmail.com with your address so we can arrange for Geyser to send a tax receipt to you.
